For decades, they have been so aggressively collected in the wild that they are now considered to be a Vulnerable species by Natureserve. They are increasingly hard to find in the wild.

Help with native plant and ecological conservation by planting these in a moist, shady spot today!

What's in a Name? These plants have many names including Black Cohosh, Black Snakeroot, Bugbane, Common Black Cohosh, and Fairy Candles. These names hint to some of the uses of these plants, such as Bugbane, where the leaves were placed in mattresses and pillows to help deter bugs, or to create insect repellant. Cohosh reportedly comes from an Algonquian Indian word meaning “rough,” which describes the knotty underground rhizomes that contain the plant’s medicinal properties. Even scientists have struggled with the name of this plant, calling them Actaea racemosa, then changing it to Cimicifuga racemosa then back to Actaea racemosa.
