Did you know that during the Victorian Age in England, ferns became incredibly popular, sparking what was called the Victorian Fern Craze? The Victorian Lady Fern, or Athyrium filix-femina ‘Victoriae’, was one of the fantastical, freaky ferns adored by gardeners and artists alike. Discovered in Scotland in 1861, it has long been treasured - and sought after - by gardeners ever since.
Unusual yet low maintenance, these architectural ferns feature unique pinnae (leaflets) on the fronds that create a very 3D effect, with funky crested tips that look like frilly tassels, notable when grown in the ground or in containers.
These ferns are remarkable enough to use as specimen or statement plants, and their distictive features and textures are best appreciated when mixed with broadleaf shade lovers, such as Coral Bells (Heuchera) and Hostas, or tucked under Rhododendrons and Pieris.
