European Beach 'Roseo-marginata'
Discover the extraordinary European Beech 'Roseo-marginata'! These captivating variegated trees transform your garden with color: spring brings purple foliage adorned with vibrant pink and cream variegation, turning to green with rose variegation, while autumn shifts to warm bronze and copper tones.
Reaching a compact 30'T x 20'W, they are wonderful options for gardens both small and large. They are also excellent choices for containers, where they can be easily maintained to whatever size you prefer. These beauties easily handle our climate here in WNC.
Although it can take them a long time to start flowering and producing nuts, their nuts are edible once cooked. Birds, chipmunks, and other small mammals may also enjoy eating the nuts.
Deer resistant.
Fagus sylvatica are native to central and southern Europe to the Caucasus, where they are typically found in woodlands.
Plant them in rich, moist, well-draining soils. They love humidity! For best foliage appearance, avoid placing them in hot, dry, windy areas.
Full sun or partial shade. They are cold hardy down to zone 4 (-30F).
Plant Nerd:
Despite their incredibly unusual foliage, they are from the late 1800s and appear to be a naturally-occurring variant of European Beeches. They are non-GMO.
Their nuts have long been a food source in Europe, with evidence going as far back as the Stone Age. The nuts can be pressed to create cooking oil, and ground up to create flour.
European Beeches can live to be at least 500 years old!
