💚Plant Nerd: These plants have many names! Sometimes referred to as Milk flowers and also noted for their tendency to bloom when it is snowing in late winter, Galanthus means "milk" and "flower" in Greek, whereas nivalis means "snow" in Latin; Flore Pleno means "with a double flower" in Latin. The French common name is "perce-neige", which translates to Snow Piercer, describing how these plants are adapted to shoot through the snow and then promptly unfurl their delightful little blooms.
They have been treasured by gardeners since at least 1731, where there is written historical documentation of Flore Pleno being the first named cultivar of Galanthus (Snowdrops). However, the first botanical art of 'Flore Pleno' appeared even earlier, in 1703.
While these plants aren't edible, Galanthus plants create some interesting substances with advanced medicinal uses, such as galantamine. It has been used as a treatment for mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
