Boston Ivy
Pathenocissus tricuspidata 'Veitchi''
🌿Classic, yet hard to find vines🌿
Famously clothing the stone-walled universities of the North ("Ivy League") and Wrigley Field in Chicago, these clinging vines provide lush foliage with purplish new growth. Large, lobed leaves mature to green before turning a brilliant red-purple in fall. The small, inconspicuous flowers turn into blue-black berries that feed the birds. Vigorous climbers that easily adhere to surfaces, valued as quick cover of fences, and brick or stone walls. A useful groundcover for blanketing large, unsightly areas. Deciduous. Native to East Asia.
Once established, these plants are amazingly resilient and sturdy, and can handle drought and poor soils.
🏆Award winning! Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.
✂️Prune annually to keep these the size that you prefer.
🦌Deer resistant: Boston Ivy is extremely resistant to damage by deer and other herbivores.
🌳Juglone resistant: These vines can be planted near Black Walnut trees.
14-20'long
🌞Sunlight? They'll have their best foliage colors in full sun (6-8 hours of direct sunlight), but can also tolerate partial and deep shade.
Zone 4, cold hardy down to -30F.
💚Plant Nerd: These plants have extra-strong "grippies", and while these means that they don't require any assistance or extra support with climbing, it does mean that you want to think carefully about exactly where to plant them. Avoid planting these where they can attach to wood or shingled covered structures, painted surfaces, and where they could climb up trees. They are a colorful choice for urban settings.
