Did you know that during the Victorian Age in England, ferns became incredibly popular, sparking what was called the Victorian Fern Craze? The Crested Soft Shield Fern, or Polystichum setiferum ‘Plumosum Densum,’ was one of the fabulous ferns adored by gardeners and artists alike. Few of these ferns remain in cultivation today.
These gorgeous semi-evergreen ferns are delightful in the shady garden - both to the eye and to the touch. Very lacy with a delicate appearance, the feathery yet sturdy fronds overlap in a horizontal fashion and whorl around the stem. Form is well-behaved, with compact, upright, vase-shaped clumps.
🌿They thrive in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in shade to part-shade.
🌿Easy to maintain - keep well watered and in spring, cut back old foliage to reveal vibrant new growth.
🌿Excellent for mass plantings, containers, in woodlands, and naturalized landscapes.
Despite their delicate appearance, they can handle considerable heat as long as they are kept in moist, shady locations. They are also deer and rabbit resistant.
